Dune II — the first of its kind real-time strategy game — paved the way for the RTS genre and drew in fans who were just discovering it. Created by Westwood Studios and published by Virgin Games, the game was available on various consoles, but truly shined on PC. For the first time, the mouse was introduced as a core control element, transforming the game into a true strategic map and turning players into skilled generals.
The game became a classic in the hearts of many. Even alongside masterpieces like StarCraft, Age of Empires, or Command & Conquer, fans of the genre still recall the sandy dunes and rocky terrain of Arrakis.
25 years later, the memory of this game hasn’t faded. A new team of volunteers has taken on the mission to revive the story carried by this legendary legacy. The project is called Dune Legacy — a fan-made clone of Dune II that faithfully recreates the original atmosphere down to the pixel-level unit behavior and cinematic storytelling.
During our tests with version 0.98.4, we encountered a few minor issues related to optional interface logistics. For example, menus sometimes wouldn’t close properly, requiring a full game restart. However, all other elements looked excellent and ran smoothly.
Thanks to Dune Legacy, the RTS legacy is once again drawing attention. The game is free to download and offers a unique retro gameplay experience that brings back the golden age of strategy. We highly recommend it to both veteran players and newcomers alike.
